Dear Hemingway,
I have gotten back to writing after a number of years
and have working this summer on a novel of Nebraska somewhat of the type of “Prairie Women,” but I think a good deal better. Wilder was here in June and suggested that I apply for a Guggenheim fellowship in order to be able to finish it and to go on with some other books. He offered to recommend me. I am writing to ask whether you feel that you could honestly let me use your name also as a reference. I imagine
that you would not care to do so unless you could see what I am doing.
The application must be in be in by October 15, but if you are going to be in New York before that time, would be very glad to show you a couple of chapters. If you don’t feel like doing it, just ignore this letter.
I have no idea where you are. Should you be in Paris and see Bill Bird, please give him my best regards.
Don’t know whether it interests you or not, but this spring on Eight street I ran across Duff. She is still with young King, the painter, and they are living somewhere on Eight Street.
With best wishes always, [signed] Ivan Beede
